FAQs – Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the minimum number of hours I need to learn before I can take my driving test?

The law in Victoria requires you to complete a minimum of 120 hours of on-road learning with an experienced driver who holds a full unrestricted licence. Your first 10 hours of professional lessons however will equate to 30 hours of time being recorded in your logbook, making professional lessons a smart move!

Q. How many lessons will I need with Bee Safe to learn to drive?

This can vary depending on you yourself and your supervising driver. Once you have completed one or two your first lessons we will be able to assess your needs and work out if there are particular skill areas where you may need more assistance or practice to become competent than others. We’ll keep you informed of your progress as you proceed through your driver training and let you know the number of lessons we feel will be necessary for success in your Test.

Q. How old do I need to be to get my Ps?

The minimum age you must be to get your Ps in Victoria is 18 years. You are allowed to sit your Hazard Perception Test at 17 years 11 months.

Q. What restrictions are there when I’m driving on a learner’s permit?

Your Blood Alcohol Level must be zero, and you must have a current full licence driver seated beside you at all times. Your car must display “L” plates of an approved type so that they are clearly visible from 20 meters from the front and rear of your car. Magnetic external plates, rather than suctioned internal plates give the best visibility to other road users.

Q. Whose car will I use at Bee Safe?

You will be learning to drive in our instructor’s car.

Q. What kind of car will I be driving?

You’ll drive a late model Suzuki Swift, which is surprisingly roomy and doesn’t feel cramped for space (automatic with all the modern safety features you expect, Navigator model, including a full set of dual controls.)

Q. Will Bee Safe help me ensure my logbook is test-ready?

Yes, as VicRoads require logbooks to be completed to very specific requirements. We will help you address any issues that may require fixing so that it is test-ready.

Q. If I obtain an automatic licence, can I drive a manual?

No, you will need to re-sit the driving test in a manual car if you want to drive a manual. This can be undertaken as a P-plater or when you are a full licence holder.

Q. Do you offer both manual and auto transmission lessons?

NO – automatic only. Most teens now start out in an automatic car and conversion to a manual licence later is optional.

Q. Can my parent sit in on my lesson?

Yes, a parent is more than welcome to ride in the back seat during your driving lesson. We actively encourage your supervising driver to accompany you after you’ve had 2-3 lessons, to ensure they are fully up to date with current legislation and procedures for learner drivers. It doesn’t help you if “doing it the way Dad said” doesn’t fulfill VicRoads licence test criteria!
